Escaping Single-Parent Vacation Hell to House-Sitting Heaven: One Mother's Transformation

Following my relationship ended, I naively thought holidays being a solo mother would be straightforward. Quickly discovered they proved often extremely costly, or seemed exclusively designed for “traditional” households, or were far too budget that I came back even more knackered than when I’d left.

Early Holiday Experiences

My first attempt, camping alongside companions, was fine up until the moment came to pack up our shelter. Hours of struggling with the tent in the heat later, I developed a dislike for the outdoors. Next, the adventure holiday for solo-parent households. Rappelling and exploring caves were brilliant, but sleeping in a bunkbed ruined my spine. We attempted a low-cost all-inclusive in Tenerife, but the hordes of traditional families felt intense, and pool-side chats with fellow ladies died down since I wasn’t come with a convenient husband for their own spouses to talk to. A trip to Majorca alongside a pal and her kids was wonderful, but the cost was eye-watering.

Discovering House-Sitting

Then, last autumn, a friend inquired if we’d look after her pets in Devon while she went to a ceremony. During a peaceful weekend, we walked along the shore, and settled near the fireplace in the evening. This prompted to house-sitting for her friend in the region, which also went smoothly. Encouraged, I paid an yearly £99 fee to join a pet-sitting website, through which, in exchange for caring for individuals' animals, you reside in their homes free of charge. Within a few days, I secured a ten-day house-sit within the county, looking after a labrador called Buzz during the time his owners traveled overseas.

Each day's strolls provided the chance to explore stunning nature spots.

It was the initial sit for unknown individuals, but any nerves dissipated as soon as we arrived at the beautiful spacious home and met the gentle Buzz, who lived for belly scratches. Our daily dog walks offered us the opportunity to explore stunning scenic areas, and, after we returned home, we could unwind outdoors for important conversations about our favourite “Ghosts” characters from the television series. We avoided any pricey tourist traps to traipse through – rather, we perused bookstores, treated ourselves to manicures, and embarked on kayak trips. I experienced lighter and more joyful than I had for a long time, and noticed the connection alongside my child Polly strengthen every day. I’m not afraid to admit that I cried with happiness. Things felt achievable again.

Could Pet-Sitting Right for You?

Pet-sitting may not be suitable for all. Certain individuals prefer no responsibilities during vacations other than selecting their upcoming cocktail, are not fond of pets, or feel odd about sleeping in a someone else’s bedroom, emptying their dishwasher, and putting out their bins. But the gentle rhythm of ordinary life, with employment stripped out and new places to explore, suits me for me.

This prevents myself from slipping into total inactivity, a state that leaves me experience restless and strangely empty. Moreover, financially, house-sitting is a life-saver for a solo mother. A 10-day getaway in a comparable property in the same area we stayed would set me back approximately £2,500 via rental platforms.

A New Outlook

As for residing in a another person’s house, I found it nourishing. Although pet-sitting represents a transaction, it’s also an act of faith between unfamiliar people and animals, which has brought out the finest version of me – my calm, caring and balanced side, overflowing with gratitude for the individuals and locations we encounter. I’ve already lined up an additional four days away, caring for a whippet within verdant Surrey, and, next year, I’d like to try house-sitting overseas. Thanks to a bit of innovative thinking, we can see the globe from the coziness of a home – it simply happens to be another person’s.
