Truce Deal Provides Relief to Gaza, However Concerns Persist Over Tomorrow

Throughout the dawn of Thursday, one could observe minimal celebration throughout the Palestinian enclave. Reports of the imminent ceasefire had spread rapidly throughout the war-torn region during the night, marked by occasional shots aimed at the clouds to express relief, however when daybreak appeared the atmosphere turned to nervous expectation.

“Fear continues to grip everyone,” said a young woman in her twenties in al-Mawasi, the cramped and unsanitary shoreline zone where numerous families have taken refuge within provisional structures and vinyl dwellings.

“We are waiting for a formal declaration coupled with tangible promises regarding access points, allowing food deliveries, and ceasing the bloodshed, devastation and displacement.”

Close by, an elderly resident Abbas Hassouna explained that his household were “waiting for a formal proclamation and real guarantees for border access, ensuring food arrives, and ceasing the slaughter, demolition and exile”.

“Once these developments occur, at that point we will fully accept them. However currently, apprehension persists. Authorities may withdraw suddenly or break the agreement like previous instances and we will remain in the same endless cycle devoid of progress just further agony,” said Hassouna, who is from northern Gaza though he has faced expulsion several times.

Conflicting Feelings Among Inhabitants

A 47-year-old woman called Ola al-Nazli mentioned she discovered about the truce from her neighbours within the al-Mawasi district. “I felt confused how to feel, if I should celebrate or sorrowful. We have experienced this many times before, and on each occasion we were disappointed again, consequently this occasion fear and caution are stronger than ever,” Nazli revealed, who was forced to leave her home in Gaza City due to the latest military operations in the city.

“Everyone lives under canvas that do not protect against low temperatures or during shelling. Individuals with savings or work were stripped of all assets. That is why our relief is accompanied by suffering and anxiety. I only hope that we can live in safety, without explosive noises, avoiding displacement, and that the crossings will be accessible quickly,” said Nazli.

Humanitarian Arrangements Underway

Humanitarian organizations said they were preparing to saturate the territory with food and necessary items. The 20-point plan provides for an increase in humanitarian assistance. The World Health Organization chief, the health organization’s leader, explained his team was prepared to “scale up its work to respond to urgent healthcare demands of patients across Gaza, and facilitate reconstruction of the devastated medical infrastructure”.

The UN agency for Palestinian refugees, applauded the arrangement as a “huge relief”, and stated it had enough food stockpiled outside Gaza to sustain the devastated territory’s over two million people over the next quarter. While increased support has arrived in the region in recent weeks, amounts remain grossly insufficient, aid personnel indicated.

Hope and Anxiety Within Evacuated Residents

Jihad al-Hilu heard the news regarding the truce via radio broadcast while residing in his temporary dwelling within al-Mawasi. “In that instant, I felt a mix of elation and respite, as if some hope reentered my soul after a long wait. We desperately wanted this occasion, for the blood to stop and for the slaughter that have broken so many homes to finish,” Hilu in his thirties told the Guardian.

“Concurrently, there is a great fear that lives within us. We are concerned that this truce may prove transient and that hostilities might resume as it did before.”

There are also general worries about what peace might mean for the region, where more than 90% of homes have experienced ruin or leveled, virtually all public works destroyed and where many people goes hungry every day. Approximately 67,000 individuals mostly civilians have been killed amid armed conflict commenced after the armed incursion in October 2023, which killed 1,200 similarly mainly ordinary people and 251 people abducted by combatants.

“My primary concern above all else is the absence of safety. Food deprivation is manageable, however danger is the real disaster. I worry that the territory might become a place of chaos controlled by criminal groups and paramilitary organizations rather than proper governance.”

Present Conditions

Observers reported armed units launched projectiles to deter residents returning to northern parts of the region on Thursday morning but reported lack of battle sounds or airstrikes.

A resident named Nadra Hamadeh, whose sister, brother-in-law, two young relatives and son in law lost their lives in hostilities, mentioned her aspiration to return from al-Mawasi to Gaza’s northern part quickly to inspect her residence, which she assumes experienced destruction yet remains standing.

“My heart is heavy for those who lost their loved ones and homes … Regarding our situation, we look forward to going back to our residence that we were forced to abandon. The sensation persists like our spirits had been separated from our physical forms at the time of evacuation,” Hamadeh in her fifties said.

“Our hope is that the war ends,
